Heidi's litter was born on Saturday 5th October. Here is a picture of them on day 1. Noses which are pink at this stage turn black within a fortnight or so. There are seven male pups and one female pup which is unusual but not so uncommon. It is how the cookie sometimes crumbles.
This is a picture taken on the first day a few hours after they were born. Not all the puppies are visible because some are hiding underneath their mother.

Elfie gave birth slightly early on 7th July (perhaps because of the hot weather). It was a litter of seven of which three are male puppies and four are female. Here is a picture taken within 24 hours of them being born. They grow fast. Typically they double in size in the first week.

German Shepherd Dogs are not usually fussy eaters or, at least, I have never had a fussy eater. They will eat just about most things. Our adult dogs regularly eat things like bananas, oranges, pears and even grapefruit. Of course, dogs are carnivores and so their main food intake must always be meat.

Although you can feed your dog whatever you like personally I think dogs do best on raw foods and particularly on raw meat. Feeding raw takes a little more time and thought than feeding so called 'complete' foods or food out of a tin but if you do go to the trouble you do at least know what your dog is eating. Ask yourself whether a human being would thrive on a diet comprised exclusively of 'ready meals'. I very much doubt it. A diet like that is very likely to lead to all sorts of dietary deficiencies and, in the long term, probably health problems.

Feeding raw is not necessarily more expensive than feeding so called 'complete' foods. It simply requires a bit more organisation such as separate freezer space for meat intended for dogs. I used to get most of my raw meat from a company called Landywoods although there are others. Landywoods deliver nationwide. Other companies may cover more local areas. We now get our supplies from Durham Animal Feeds primarily because they deliver fortnightly.

If you take a look at this part of their web sites it will give you a good overview of the sort of raw foods your dog can eat.

Landywoods

Durham Animal Feeds

The web site will also give you quite a good idea of the cost of the different types of meat you can buy from which you can see that it can be more cost effective than 'complete' foods. Your dog will certainly be the better for it.

We do also use vitamin supplements and get ours from Germany from a company called Cafortan. These things can be ordered online and always arrive promptly. Their web site address is

Cafortan

The 1 kg size contains 1,000 tablets which will last one dog quite a long time...

The health of your dog is not only determined by genetics but also upon what you feed it and how you look after it.

By the way, the last litter (born on 12th January 2023) was a 'T' litter - that is all the puppies in the litter will have a name beginning with 'T'. Dogs have to be registered with the Kennel Club with the kennel name and an individual name. It is conventional to name all the puppies from the same litter with the same initial letter. So these puppies might be called Araxes Tino, Araxes Toro etc.

Of course, you can give a puppy whatever pet name you want. For instance, Wera's registered name was Wera vom Team Fiemereck but we called her Daisy.

On the other hand, I knew I was going to keep a female puppy from an 'A' litter so I registered her as Araxes Asta and we call her Asta.

I mention this because if anyone has a preference for any particular name beginning with 'T' then by all means let me know. I normally send the application for registration to the Kennel Club when the puppies are about a week old so I need to decide on the names then. The name doesn't actually get attached to a particular puppy until they get tattooed at just over 7 weeks of age which then identifies them and the name is at that point fixed on a particular puppy.
